The team led by Jairos Tapera needed just one point to go to the semi-finals of the regional flagship tournament, and even a 1-0 defeat would have qualified them.

However, against the East Africans, the Warriors, who led Group B with six points from two games, faltered when it counted most.

They shared the same number of points (six) with Kenya and Comoros, who took first place after defeating Zambia 1-0 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

After the Warriors’ three-game losing streak against Zambia was eliminated, they were placed in third position.

“I’m not happy with the outcome, especially the way we were eliminated from the next round.

“There were numerous ways we could have saved this defeat, but this was not our day.

“I was aware right away that forcing a comeback if we gave up first would be challenging.

“The boys did everything they could to keep this from happening, but it was not enough,” Tapera remarked.

He continued, saying:

“I’m pleased for the lads, especially the ones who participated in this competition for the first time and scored six points from three games, which shows we have something to improve on. It was a significant accomplishment for them.

“It’s time to embrace these boys so they can adjust to the system. Some of them are ready to be promoted to the senior team.”

In minute 53, Kenya took the lead thanks to a goal from Austine Atieno.

Tapera’s men had a party mood in their area, but they looked depressed when they began to play aimlessly.

Benson Ochieng’s close-range goal in the 73rd minute increased Kenya’s lead.

As the Warriors changed gears in an attempt to locate a consolation goal, Takunda Benhura continued to fire blanks.
