Five police officers found themselves in hot soup after being caught and arrested for soliciting a US$5 bribe from a truck driver.

In a sting operation organized by their peers, the officers Dennis Tafadzwa Chivaku, Freeway Muninipi, Givemore Mucheka, Sharon Madondo, and Getrude Ndenga were captured, yesterday they were in front of Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa in Ruwa.

The five cops were involved in an operation called “NO TO ILLEGAL SAND POACHING” out of DHQ in Harare East.

The situation started last month when a truck driver complained to the Internal Investigations department of Police Headquarters about certain Zimbabwe Republic Police officers in the Ruwa area extorting money from truck drivers who were engaged in sand poaching.

To capture the rogue officers in the act, PGHQ Internal Investigations personnel set up a trap on Monday. They traveled to the group’s operational location in Sunway City, Ruwa.

The informant was in possession of the trap money, a US$5 note, and was driving an Iveco 5-tonne car with the registration number AED 2865.

The driver was stopped by the suspects who were using Mucheka’s personal vehicle when they stopped the him along Sunway Drive in Ruwa . The officers were apprehended as soon as they received the trap money, demanding money in exchange for what they described as a “free passage.”

They were immediately apprehended.

In another story, Tarisai Sithole a police officer from Matapi Police Station in Mbare appeared in court yesterday, accused of raping and robbing a woman at a cemetery.

The 35-year-old Tarisai Sithole was charged with rape and robbery in front of Harare magistrate Mrs. Marehwanazvo Gofa.
