A NEW tourist resort has opened in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central, in a development set to boost domestic tourism in the province.

Makumbiri Resort was transformed from a farm to become a tourist sanctuary.

Makumbiri Resort was transformed from a farm to become a tourist sanctuary.

It comprises a game park, rock paintings from ancient times, a large forest with indigenous trees, a dam and other recreational facilities.

Speaking during a recent tour, the owner of the resort, Jefta Mugweni, said the area was promoting ecotourism in Mashonaland Central.

“We bought Makumbiri Farm in 2002, as a normal farming operation.

“Over the years we decided that its dam, the large forest which comprises a large number of indigenous trees, wild animals and ancient rock paintings made it more suitable to be a resort

“We offer several activities, including game drives to see the wild animals and rock paintings, plus boat cruises and fishing in our dam.”

He said they are ready to work with authorities to help in preserving the rock paintings, which tell the history of people who lived in the area, in ancient times.

The area is under Mazowe district, where the spiritual icon of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, Mbuya Nehanda, lived.

“Our plan is to grow tourism in Mazowe district. It is a place full of beautiful places and a rich history.

It comprises a game park, rock paintings from ancient times, a large forest with indigenous trees, a dam and other recreational facilities.

“We are also working with the local people and, since we opened, we have created about 30 jobs, taking most of the staff from nearby areas.”
