Following her family’s refusal to take part in the funeral ceremonies until they received US$4,000 and nine cows, a HEADMAN issued an order for the woman who had suffered severe beatings at the hands of her spouse.
They assert that the outstanding lobola is $4000 USD.
After a domestic argument, Farai Madotsa, 41, a self-described prophet in the Nyatate neighborhood of Nyanga, is charged with killing his wife, Penelope Yeukai Nyabanga, by beating her.
The inhabitants of Nyanga are horrified by the tragedy.
The headman ordered Penelope to be buried after nine days because the parties could not agree on a course of action for compensation claims.
A close cousin claimed that the headman, only known as Mushonga, called both relatives and ordered that Penelope be buried, with any compensation disputes to be settled at a later date.
The family of Penelope were not pleased with the order and departed the funeral wake before to the burial.
“Madzibaba was simply residing with the wife and not making any payments to the family members.”
“They demanded US$4,000 as lobola and nine cows for the offense, and the demands were too much for them,” a relative added.
“The deceased’s relatives declined the offer, even though the suspect’s relatives were able to obtain four cows.
“They demanded that the demands be met before their relative is buried,” they said.
Due to the impasse, the killer’s family was compelled to speak with the headman, who subsequently gave the order to bury the body.
“Everyone was there at the meeting, but the relatives packed up their things and went as soon as they left the headman’s house.
“On Friday, she was buried in the midst of conflict.”
According to some reports, Farai believed his wife was having an extramarital affair.
According to a different relative, the couple fought frequently.
“We assumed it was just one of their regular altercations, but itori ngozi yauya mumhuri was how it ended.
“They had three beautiful children after six years of marriage.”
Following his appearance at the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court, where he is accused of murder, Farai has since been placed under remand in custody.
